For people with diabetes, even a minor foot problem can quickly develop into a serious complication. That is why it is essential to act promptly if you notice any changes, such as non-healing wounds, skin discolouration, swelling or pain.

1. Seek Medical Attention Immediately

If you notice any problems with your feet, do not hesitate to consult a podiatrist, diabetes specialist or GP. The earlier a problem is identified, the greater the chance of successful treatment and prevention of serious complications, such as infections or diabetic foot ulcers.

2. Do Not Treat Foot Wounds Yourself

Even minor cuts, blisters or abrasions that might not cause concern in people without diabetes can lead to serious infections and delayed wound healing in those with diabetes.

Attempting to treat wounds at home without professional guidance can be risky. It is always advisable to seek medical attention so that you receive appropriate treatment and advice on preventing infections.

3. Prevention Is Key to Healthy Feet

Regular foot checks are one of the most effective ways to help prevent serious complications.

Recommendations include:

  • Check Your Feet Daily – Look for changes in skin colour, cracks, blisters, swelling or other unusual signs.

  • Moisturise Your Skin Regularly – Keeping your skin hydrated helps prevent dryness and cracking, which can increase the risk of infection. Avoid applying moisturiser between your toes.

  • Wear Appropriate Footwear – Avoid tight, uncomfortable shoes and walking barefoot to minimise the risk of foot injuries.

  • Use Orthopaedic Insoles When Recommended – Suitable insoles can help distribute pressure more evenly across your feet and reduce the risk of pressure points.

Proper foot care and responding promptly to any changes are essential for preventing serious health complications.

Taking care of your feet today can help you avoid pain and complications in the future!
